Earlier Report Observations

From 2018 to 2020, the market volume for lemons and limes in Georgia declined from 4 881 t to 3 801 t. This contraction occurred despite rising imports, as a more than tenfold increase in exports over the period and a drop in domestic output, constrained by the frost damage risk that limits yields on approximately 1 000 hectares of plantations, reduced the volume available for local consumption.

The market rebounded to 5 362 t in 2021 when export volumes temporarily fell back and imports peaked. However, the market shrank again in the following two years, reaching 3 470 t in 2023, as exports continued their ascent to over 4 200 t. Imports from Turkey, while remaining substantial, could not offset this outflow, leading to a smaller domestic market.

In 2024, first-quarter imports saw a slight reduction, yet the market's reliance on Turkish supply persists. Concurrently, growing consumer interest in natural and health-beneficial products is supporting lemon consumption in areas like hair care, reflecting evolving demand patterns.
