Earlier Report Observations

Between 2018 and 2020, the broader lighting market in Germany, which includes LED technologies, showed mixed signals. In 2018, the niche for portable and pocket lamps was growing steadily, while the total market volume for lamps and luminaires stood at around 5.4 billion euros. By 2020, the product group 'Light' recorded a decline of 3.1%, partly due to less benefit from the construction boom, setting a backdrop for the LCD or LED indicator panels segment.

Available data from 2021 shows the market volume for indicator panels at 3 038 t, rising by 11.4% to 3 385 t in 2022. This increase was driven by an 8.1% growth in imports, while exports fell by 8.4%. Domestic production remained steady at 1 235 t throughout these two years.

The market contracted significantly from 2023 onward. Volume dropped by 17.7% to 2 787 t in 2023 and fell a further 19.9% to 2 232 t in 2024. The decline in 2024 coincided with a cautious consumer climate and a 1.2% sales drop in the major domestic appliances segment, indicating weaker demand for components like indicator panels. Changes in consumer behavior and sustainability trends also influenced the market. While online retail in Germany grew by 1% in 2023, it was insufficient to offset the broader downturn.
