Earlier Report Observations

The market for lard stearin, lard oil, oleostearin, oleo-oil and tallow oil in Latin America and the Caribbean opened the period with a volume of 1 635 t in 2018. That year, high cattle slaughter volumes in Brazil boosted domestic tallow production for biodiesel and industrial uses, while Argentina and Brazil implemented new hygiene and sanitation regulations for tallow processing establishments.

Market volume then contracted to 1 290 t by 2020, before rebounding to a peak of 1 676 t in 2022.

In 2023, consumption fell to 1 449 t even as regional production continued to grow. During that year, Baerlocher inaugurated a modern fatty acid production unit in Brazil, and ADM expanded its regenerative agriculture program in the region. By 2024, strong export demand for Brazilian tallow from the U.S. biodiesel industry, driven by federal tax incentives and blend mandates, alongside drought conditions affecting supply, became key market influences.
