Knitted or crocheted pile fabrics market in Hungary

The market for knitted or crocheted pile fabrics in Hungary expanded sharply in volume terms during 2019, reaching 1 745 t, a 41% increase from the previous year. In value terms, however, growth was more modest, rising only 10% to $8.3 million, suggesting a shift toward lower-priced products or changes in the mix of imports.

By 2023, the market had contracted significantly, with volume halving to 913 t and value declining to $5.9 million. The downturn continued into 2024, with volume dropping further to 589 t and value to $4.7 million. This decline coincided with a steady reduction in import volumes, which fell from a peak of over 2 000 t in 2020 to just 835 t in 2024.

Domestic production played a minor role throughout the period, dwindling from 46 t in 2018 to just 9 t in 2024. The market thus remained heavily import-dependent, but overall size diminished substantially over the six-year span.

From 2018 to 2021, Romania, Czechia, and Slovakia were the primary buyers of knitted or crocheted pile fabrics from Hungary, accounting for 32.0%, 26.5%, and 14.4% of exports in kind, respectively. Together, these three countries made up 72.9% of total exports in kind.

After two years of contraction, Hungary's cross-border shipments of knitted or crocheted pile fabrics increased. In 2021, exports amounted to 2 844 thousand US dollars, marking a gain of 26.2% compared to the prior year. Over the period from 2018 to 2021, exports decreased by 25.1%, with a compound annual growth rate of -9.2%. The minimum value was recorded in 2020 at 2 253 thousand US dollars, and the largest decline occurred in 2019, at 30.7%.

From 2018 to 2021, Romania, Czechia, and Bosnia and Herzegovina were the main buyers of knitted or crocheted pile fabrics from Hungary in value terms, accounting for 21.3%, 20.1%, and 13.1% of exports, respectively. Together, these three countries comprised 54.4% of total exports in value terms.

Over the period from 2018 to 2021, imports decreased by 7.3%, with a compound annual growth rate of -2.5%. The maximum volume was recorded in 2020 at 2 027 tonnes, and the largest increase occurred in 2019, at 29.3%.

Between 2018 and 2021, China and Germany played the leading roles in Hungary's imports of knitted or crocheted pile fabrics in kind, with a combined share of 81.7% of total flows. The remaining share was distributed among other countries.

In 2021, imports came to 11 708 thousand US dollars, corresponding to a moderate increase of 9.0% relative to the prior year. Between 2018 and 2021, imports increased by 6.5%, equating to an annualized rate of 2.1%. The minimum value was recorded in 2019 at 10 691 thousand US dollars, and the largest decline occurred in 2019, at 2.7%.
