From 2019 to 2024, the Portuguese market for iron or steel household articles experienced significant volatility in volume terms. After starting at 19,428 tonnes in 2019, market size dipped to 17,632 tonnes in 2020, rebounded to a peak of 20,188 tonnes in 2021, and then entered a sustained decline, falling to 11,438 tonnes by 2024 – a drop of more than 40% from the 2021 high.

In value terms, the market showed a different pattern. It reached 87.5 million US dollars in 2021, a sharp increase that far outpaced the modest volume growth, indicating a rise in average prices or a shift toward higher-value products. However, from 2022 onward, the market value also contracted, ending at 65.8 million US dollars in 2024.

In 2021, Portugal produced 19 615 tonnes of iron or steel household articles, up 16.6% from 2020. Over the 2019-2021 period, production increased by 11.8%, with a compound annual growth rate of 3.8%. The lowest production level was in 2020 at 16 821 tonnes, which also saw the largest decline of 4.1%.

After two years of decline, Portugal's exports of iron or steel household articles rebounded in 2021. The country shipped 7 781 tonnes, representing a strong 11.8% increase compared to 2020. However, over the 2018-2021 period, exports fell by 10%, with an average annual decline of 3.5%. The lowest export volume was recorded in 2020 at 6 958 tonnes, while the largest drop occurred in 2019 at 10.9%.

From 2018 to 2021, Spain, France, and Germany were the top buyers of Portugal's iron or steel household articles by volume. Spain accounted for 30.5% of exports, France for 17.8%, and Germany for 9.9%. Together, these three countries represented 58.2% of Portugal's total exports in this category.

Portugal's export value of iron or steel household articles has increased for the second consecutive year. In 2021, exports totaled 63 180 thousand US dollars, showing a 17.1% year-over-year advance. The lowest value was in 2019 at 52 858 thousand US dollars, which also experienced the largest decline of 17.6%.
