The market volume for in-shell walnuts in Egypt grew from 24 613 tons in 2018 to 26 687 tons in 2022. This increase was primarily driven by rising imports, which expanded from 843 tons to 3 055 tons over the same period. The surge in imports responded to growing consumer demand for healthy nuts as an alternative to processed foods, coupled with a clear preference for high-quality American walnuts. Local production remained stable at around 23 700 tons due to limited cultivation areas not exceeding 100 acres in key provinces, which constrained domestic supply.

In 2023, the market volume declined to 25 460 tons as imports fell to 1 854 tons. This contraction was influenced by economic pressures including currency fluctuations that raised walnut prices, reducing purchasing power. Global price volatility and increased regional demand also affected import costs. Despite these challenges, consumer interest in healthy nuts persisted, and efforts to improve local varieties continued, though limited agricultural land and low investment kept production stagnant.
