Earlier Report Observations

The in-shell almond market in Oceania saw strong growth from 133.6 thousand tonnes in 2018 to 315.3 thousand tonnes in 2022. This expansion was fueled by rising global demand, amplified after 2020 when the COVID-19 pandemic created a worldwide oversupply and lower prices, which helped boost consumption. Almonds also solidified their position as the most used nut in new product innovations across Europe, particularly in plant-based foods, sustaining demand for almonds internationally.

Australia's role as a key exporter of in-shell almonds was reinforced by the global almond market's steady growth, averaging 4.5% annually. However, market volume contracted to 282.4 thousand tonnes in 2023, coinciding with weaker demand late in the year that led to cautious purchasing. In 2024, Select Harvest expanded its production capacity by 20% to meet growing worldwide demand for snacks and plant-based products, while industry players adopted more sustainable packaging solutions.
