Production of in-shell almonds in Burkina Faso fluctuated between 1 800 and 2 200 t from 2018 to 2023, peaking at 2 200 t in 2018. The initial rollout of small processing units in 2018 supported output, but a 33% contraction in local processing volume in 2022 contributed to a drop in production that year.

Government plans aimed to significantly increase raw cashew nut production and processing capacity, setting a target of 55 000 t by 2024. In 2020, a decision to ban raw nut exports from April 2024 was announced to secure supply for local processors, although the country recorded no exports of in-shell almonds during the period.

By 2023, production had stabilized around 1 937 t, coinciding with a USD 11 million investment project to strengthen the cashew value chain. However, installed processing capacity remained underutilized, with only about 16 000 t actually processed against a potential of 30 000 t.

In 2020, Burkina Faso produced 1 914 tonnes of in-shell almonds, representing a modest 3.9% increase over 2019. Over the 2017-2020 period, production grew by 12.6%, with an average annual growth rate of 4.0%. The highest production level was recorded in 2018 at 2 200 tonnes, which marked a significant 29.4% increase from the previous year. However, production then fell by 16.3% in 2019, the largest decline observed during this period.
