Earlier Report Observations

From 2018 to 2020, the Greek market for illuminated signs and name-plates contracted under tightening regulatory constraints. The introduction of restrictive placement rules in public spaces in 2018, which required approval from the Urban and Architectural Control Committee, limited new installations to reduce visual pollution. This framework was reinforced in 2019 with stricter compliance checks and penalties for violations. In 2020, additional technical specifications, such as a maximum brightness of 250 cd/m² and a minimum 20 cm distance from public buildings, further increased compliance costs. These measures collectively suppressed domestic demand, leading the market to decline from 26.4 million USD in 2018 to 17.7 million USD in 2020.

Regulatory adjustments in 2021 temporarily reversed the trend. The inclusion of LED technologies in the norms and the mandate for energy-efficient lighting sources prompted businesses to replace older signs, boosting market volume to 21.5 million USD. However, in 2022, the integration of product labeling requirements, like energy labels and CE marking, into the licensing process added administrative hurdles. Coupled with a surge in exports, the domestic market shrank to 13.8 million USD.

From 2023 onward, the market entered a recovery phase. Without major new regulatory shifts, production and domestic demand expanded steadily. The market size grew to 16.5 million USD in 2023 and further to 23.9 million USD in 2024, suggesting that the industry adapted to the established norms and found new growth momentum.
