Earlier Report Observations

The market volume of household refrigerators and freezers in Russia showed significant fluctuations between 2018 and 2024. Starting at 4 689 thousand units in 2018, the market contracted the following year before experiencing a sharp recovery to 5 675 thousand units in 2020. This growth occurred despite the initial demand shock from the COVID-19 pandemic, with production increasing by 14% that year as the market quickly rebounded. The expansion continued into 2021, reaching 5 910 thousand units, supported by the exit of major Western brands like LG, Samsung, and Bosch, which accelerated import substitution and stimulated the localization of domestic manufacturing.

A major disruption hit in 2022 when sanctions and geopolitical tensions caused a severe slump, reducing market size to 4 704 thousand units. This was driven by a steep 57.9% drop in production in March, coupled with rising prices and shortages of imported components. However, a strong recovery followed in 2023, with the market rebounding to 5 810 thousand units. This resurgence was underpinned by the continued policy of import substitution, which saw the share of Russian producers exceed 65% of the market. The introduction of a new mandatory product labeling system in 2022 also contributed to market transparency.

By 2024, the market volume reached a peak of 6 028 thousand units for the period. Domestic production consistently exceeded imports, and the share of Russian-made refrigerators grew to over 60%, supported by investments in key components like compressors. The market landscape was dominated by major players such as OJSC 'KZK Biryusa', JSC 'IHP Appliances', and LLC 'BEKO'. In 2025, production volumes declined, influenced by high Central Bank key rates and reduced new housing construction, which dampened consumer demand, though a partial resumption of production by LG at its Moscow region plant in spring 2025 provided some counterbalance.
