Earlier Report Observations

Between 2018 and 2020, the honey market volume in Libya contracted from 1 813 t to 1 342 t. Security threats and economic instability reduced consumers' purchasing power, dampening demand. Rising fertilizer prices due to disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz increased beekeeping costs, while ongoing food insecurity and exchange rate fluctuations limited the expansion of local production.

From 2021 onward, market volume recovered strongly, reaching 2 773 t in 2023. Local honey output faced persistent challenges: pests such as wasps and sesame moths attacked hives, and higher prices for imported agricultural inputs raised production expenses. Nevertheless, a sharp rise in honey imports offset the modest decline in domestic production, driving overall market growth. In 2024, imports remained elevated at 1 840 t, indicating continued reliance on foreign supply.
