The honey market in Azerbaijan demonstrated steady growth from 2018 to 2022, with volume increasing from 5 076 t to 7 544 t. This expansion was supported by the favorable natural-climatic conditions and rich plant diversity in the Karabakh region, which positively affected product quality. Pilot projects that enabled the relocation of bee colonies to summer pastures and enhanced beekeeper safety also contributed to market infrastructure development during this period.

In 2023, market volume fell significantly to 4 649 t. Concurrently, further pilot initiatives in beekeeping, including risk assessment for pasture migration and measures to ensure the safety of bee colonies and keepers, were implemented to improve market conditions. The persistent advantage of Karabakh's climatic and floral resources remained a key factor for the market.

Azerbaijan's honey production has grown for the third year in a row. In 2021, the country produced 6,803 tons of honey, which represents a 2.3% increase compared to the previous year. Looking at the period from 2018 to 2021, production rose by 36.2%, with an average annual growth rate of 10.9%.

Exports honey from Azerbaijan

The market showed significant fluctuations during this period. Exports hit their lowest point in 2020 at 0.3 tons and peaked in 2018, with a 28-fold difference between these years. From 2018 to 2021, Japan was the dominant market for Azerbaijan's honey exports in volume terms, accounting for 79.2% of total flows. The remaining exports were distributed among a variety of other, smaller markets.
