Earlier Report Observations

The Zambian groundnut oil market experienced significant volatility in volume between 2018 and 2023. The initial period was shaped by the entry of a new private player, New Rotation Zambia (NRZ), which purchased over 630 metric tonnes of shelled groundnuts in 2018. This initiative created a fresh marketing channel for farmers, incentivizing groundnut cultivation among smallholders and supporting production at 4 581 tonnes that year.

Following a decline in 2019 and 2020, production began to recover in 2021. A sharp surge to 6 428 tonnes in 2022 coincided with reported price increases for groundnuts and sunflower by 23.47% to 34.79%. These higher commodity prices directly encouraged farmers to expand output, demonstrating how raw material cost fluctuations can drive production volumes.

The market volume receded to 5 162 tonnes in 2023, returning closer to 2021 levels. Throughout the period, broader agricultural policies and market access conditions continued to influence the production dynamics for groundnut oil.
