Earlier Report Observations

The market volume for groundnut oil in Japan contracted from 978 tonnes in 2018 to 586 tonnes in 2023. This decline was primarily driven by a sustained shift in consumer preference toward oils perceived as healthier, such as olive and sunflower oil, amid growing health consciousness. Concurrently, supply chain disruptions and price volatility, exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic and the Russia-Ukraine conflict, constrained availability and dampened consumption.

The pandemic-related labor shortages and export restrictions in key producing countries like Malaysia and Indonesia in 2020 strained palm oil supplies, impacting the broader vegetable oil market and contributing to the sharp drop in groundnut oil volume that year. In 2022, the war-induced 40% price surge for sunflower oil prompted some short-term substitution, leading to a temporary rebound in groundnut oil consumption. However, by 2023, rising demand for vegetable oils in biodiesel production further tightened edible oil supplies, applying additional upward pressure on prices and accelerating the market's decline.

Looking ahead, the Japanese government's energy basic plan, decided in February 2025, promotes biodiesel use, which may continue to influence edible oil availability. Meanwhile, manufacturers are responding to health trends with new fortified and sustainable oil products, though these innovations focus largely on canola, olive, and palm oil rather than groundnut oil.
