Earlier Report Observations

The market for groundnut oil in Cambodia experienced significant changes between 2018 and 2023. Volume expanded from 481 tonnes in 2018 to a peak of 520 tonnes in 2021. This growth was underpinned by the country's agricultural base, where groundnuts are a significant secondary crop, and by government policies encouraging investment in agro-processing and diversification. These domestic efforts coincided with a global rise in health consciousness, which increased demand for natural oils like groundnut oil in the Asia-Pacific region.

After 2021, the market contracted sharply to 318 tonnes in 2022 and settled at 296 tonnes in 2023. This downturn occurred despite regional news of new oil refinery projects, including groundnut oil capacity, signaling entry of new players. Structural challenges within Cambodia's agriculture sector—such as unstable production chains, volatile pricing, and insufficient investment in processing—likely constrained production and overall market volume during these years.

Throughout the period, broader factors like the launch of the National Cassava Policy, which emphasized agricultural processing, and ongoing modernization efforts including adoption of better seeds and technology provided a supportive context. Additionally, the growth of Cambodia's agricultural exports, with groundnuts among key products, indicated underlying production potential, even as the groundnut oil market volume declined.
