Earlier Report Observations

The South African groundnut oil market faced production constraints in the late 2010s due to severe droughts in 2015-2016, which reduced groundnut yields and increased reliance on imports. Industry support from the Oil & Protein Seeds Development Trust, through research and information initiatives, helped stabilize the sector. Market volume dipped to 1 391 thousand tons in 2019 before recovering to 1 450 thousand tons in 2020.

Production and market volume grew steadily from 2020 onward, reaching 1 530 thousand tons in 2022. This expansion was primarily driven by the war in Ukraine, which disrupted global cooking oil supplies and prompted a strategic push for indigenous oilseed production, including groundnut oil. Global supply chain disruptions further incentivized local market development.

In 2023, market volume declined to 1 460 thousand tons. During this period, the National Agricultural Marketing Council's market access program aimed to integrate smallholder farmers into the value chain, while consumer preferences increasingly favored health-conscious and ethically produced food oils. Rising cooking oil prices and sustained demand for healthy alternatives continued to influence the market into 2024.
