Earlier Report Observations

The Asian grape wine market contracted in volume from 3 496 million liters in 2018 to 3 141 million liters in 2020. This initial decline was significantly influenced by regulatory changes in China, where the government's restrictions on 'three public consumptions' and the 'eight rules' curtailed premium wine consumption, a major market segment. The early impact of the COVID-19 pandemic also began to alter consumer behavior during this period.

Market volume fell further to 2 891 million liters in 2021, yet its value increased, reflecting a consumer shift toward higher-value imported wines as the market adjusted post-pandemic. A rebound to 3 100 million liters occurred in 2022, driven by rising wine imports and a growing consumer emphasis on health and quality. The volume then dropped to 2 647 million liters in 2023, a year marked by the expansion of online sales channels in China and continued growth in the Indian wine market fueled by product variety and wine tourism, though these developments did not offset broader regional declines.

Underlying these fluctuations were persistent trends, including government policies in China and Russia aimed at reducing alcohol consumption and protecting consumers. Concurrently, consumer preferences across Asia increasingly favored premiumization, health-conscious choices, and online purchasing, which reshaped distribution and consumption patterns throughout the period.
