Earlier Report Observations
Goat meat production in Suriname remained stable at around 7 metric tons in both 2018 and 2019. This stability was supported by government investments in cold storage and transport infrastructure to prevent spoilage of agricultural products and strengthen the logistics chain. Biosecurity measures, such as temporary restrictions on poultry meat imports from risk areas, also helped protect the local livestock sector from diseases.
Production dropped to 6 metric tons in 2020, coinciding with government efforts to modernize and implement sustainable policies in the agriculture sector, which may have caused temporary disruptions. However, output rebounded to 7 metric tons in 2021, partly due to a temporary ban on poultry meat imports to prevent avian influenza outbreaks, increasing reliance on domestic meat sources including goat meat.
Output stabilized at 6.9 metric tons in 2022 as authorities focused on integrated agricultural chains and food security. Production then grew to 7.47 metric tons in 2023, driven by market liberalization that transferred cattle import control to private entrepreneurs and ongoing modernization of cold and frozen storage facilities to enhance meat quality and shelf life.
