Goat meat production in India expanded from 1.1 million tonnes in 2018 to 1.2 million tonnes by 2020. This initial growth was supported by the rising momentum in commercial goat farming due to favorable economic prospects and consistently high consumption. The rapid increase in retail stores, supermarkets, and refrigerator facilities during 2019 further stimulated demand for frozen meat, encouraging higher production volumes.

Production continued its upward trajectory, reaching 1.4 million tonnes in 2022. This significant surge was driven by multiple developments: a marked increase in sales of packed chilled and frozen meat in urban supermarkets, the emergence of kiosks at transport hubs selling ready-to-eat and frozen meats, and shifting consumer preferences towards convenience and processed foods. Proposed regulations for micro-abattoirs under BIS and FSSAI standards also aimed to enhance the infrastructure for fresh meat, supporting market access.

By 2023, output reached 1.6 million tonnes. The market was bolstered by India's position as a major meat exporter, with new export rules for halal certification and strong performance from leading companies like Allanasons Pvt Ltd. Looking to 2024, the broader Indian meat market was valued at $55.3 billion, with growing segments including frozen/chilled products and ready-to-eat ethnic snacks, supported by cold-chain improvements and government initiatives aimed at the processing industry.

India's goat meat production grew for the third consecutive year. In 2020, the country produced 1,213 thousand tonnes of goat meat, marking a 2.8% increase compared to the previous year. Over the 2017–2020 period, production rose by 17.9%, with a compound annual growth rate of 5.6%.

In 2019, goat meat shipments from India totaled 245 kilograms, representing a sharp decline of 76.4% from 2018. The highest export volume was recorded in 2018 at 1,039 kilograms, which also saw the largest increase of 889.5%.
