Earlier Report Observations

From 2018 to 2019, India's duck meat market volume increased from 41 549 tonnes to 44 129 tonnes, with production rising from 41 457 tonnes to 44 011 tonnes. This expansion occurred despite noted limitations in government subsidies and financial support for duck meat production, which constrained capital access for small farmers. During this period, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) enforced stricter limits on antibiotic and drug residues in duck meat, strengthening quality assurance and labeling requirements across the industry.

The market stabilized above 44 000 tonnes annually from 2020 onward. The COVID-19 pandemic disrupted supply chains and transport in 2020, temporarily reducing the availability of fresh and frozen duck meat and cutting imports. Subsequently, the expansion of online retail platforms provided smaller producers with direct consumer access, broadening market reach. However, a surge in corn and soybean feed prices in 2022 raised production costs, contributing to a slight dip in output. In 2023, localized outbreaks of avian influenza (H5N1) necessitated enhanced biosecurity measures on duck farms, temporarily affecting production capacity and helping to keep volumes steady.

In March 2024, the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC) slashed the basic customs duty on frozen duck meat from 30% to 5%, significantly lowering import costs and creating potential for increased shipments from the United States. Concurrently, FSSAI implemented stricter traceability and labeling standards for duck meat products, mandating production dates, shelf-life information, and imported ingredient details on packaging.
