Earlier Report Observations
Goat meat production in El Salvador began a gradual decline from 84 540 kg in 2018 to 79 670 kg in 2020. This period saw Nicaragua obtain certification in May 2018 to export beef to more demanding markets, potentially increasing competition for domestic meat producers. Simultaneously, the local poultry sector maintained self-sufficiency, offering consumers a reliable and affordable alternative to goat meat.
The downward trend continued, with production falling to 75 350 kg by 2023. A 2022 competition study by the Superintendency of Competition highlighted regulatory and market factors affecting poultry and egg production, reinforcing the availability of competing proteins. In 2023, El Salvador's beef imports exceeded $200 million, and Argentina initiated provisional sanitary certification to export beef to the country, further diversifying the meat supply and intensifying competition for goat meat.
In October 2024, the first shipment of Argentine beef arrived in El Salvador, marking the entry of a new major supplier into the beef market and signaling continued competitive pressure on niche segments like goat meat.
