The Romanian glass moulds market experienced strong growth, with its size increasing from 8 713 thousand USD in 2018 to 22 877 thousand USD in 2024. The market's expansion began with the 2018 publication of the technical regulation 'C-47-2022', which set new safety and performance standards for glass products and the moulds used to make them. This prompted manufacturers to invest in compliant equipment, supporting early growth in production and market volume.

Growth continued through the early 2020s, reinforced by the full enforcement of the C-47/2022 regulation in July 2022. This measure standardized production and installation procedures for glass items, directly raising requirements for mould design, testing, and certification. The regulatory push sustained demand for upgraded moulds, contributing to rising imports and keeping domestic production on an upward trajectory from 24 438 thousand USD in 2018 to 35 147 thousand USD in 2024.

A new driver emerged in 2024 with the implementation of EU Directive 2019/90, requiring attached caps on beverage containers up to 3 liters. This created fresh demand for specialized moulds capable of producing bottles with integrated caps, opening a new segment for producers and contributing to the market's further rise to 22 877 thousand USD by the end of the period.

Romania's exports of glass moulds have increased for the second year in a row. In 2020, the country exported 1,183 tonnes of glass moulds, marking a 4.6% year-on-year rise. The lowest export volume was recorded in 2018 at 994 tonnes, which also saw the largest decline of 17.1%. The following year, 2019, experienced the most significant increase at 13.8%.

Between 2017 and 2020, the top destinations for Romania's glass moulds exports in volume terms were France, accounting for 18.6% of exports, Germany with 17.8%, and Belgium at 16.0%. Together, these three countries represented 52.4% of total export flows.

Romania's glass moulds exports in value terms have grown for the second consecutive year. In 2020, exports reached 23,289 thousand US dollars, reflecting a 6.6% increase compared to the previous year. Over the 2017-2020 period, exports rose by 8.3%, with a compound annual growth rate of 2.7%. The lowest value was in 2018 at 20,223 thousand US dollars, which also saw the largest decline of 5.9%. In 2019, exports rebounded with the highest increase of 8.1%.

From 2017 to 2020, Germany contributed 17.8% of Romania's glass moulds exports in value terms, followed by Belgium at 16.8% and France at 16.5%. These three countries combined accounted for 51.1% of total export value.

Imports reached their lowest point in 2018 at 829 tonnes, which also recorded the largest decline of 58.9%. In 2019, imports surged by 177.3%, the highest increase, and by 2020, they amounted to 2,533 tonnes, a 10.2% rise from the previous year. Overall, imports varied by a factor of 3.1 between the low in 2018 and the high in 2020.
