Earlier Report Observations

Fiji's ginger production and domestic market volume showed overall growth from 2018 to 2023, despite a minor dip in 2019. The resumption of fresh ginger exports to Australia in 2018 after a three-year lapse created new demand, while the formation of the Fiji Ginger Farmer and Marketing Association the following year strengthened farmer organization and capacity building, laying groundwork for future expansion.

A significant rise in export demand during 2020, particularly to the US, Canada, the Netherlands, and Australia, drove production past 11 000 t. Active support from the Ministry of Agriculture and Waterways helped maintain export flows during the COVID-19 pandemic. This momentum continued into 2021 as Australia became the largest single market, importing 980 t of Fijian ginger, which incentivized further increases in output.

Growth was sustained through 2022 and 2023 by concrete government backing, including a $600 000 budget allocation for the Ginger Farming Programme and plans to raise funding to $2 million. Investments in processing capacity, such as grants for Kaiming Agro to expand storage and production, alongside diversified export pathways, supported production reaching 15 781 t and the domestic market volume climbing to 14 491 t by 2023.
