Garlic production in Moldova declined to 7 124 t in 2019 but then demonstrated steady growth, reaching 9 839 t by 2023. This expansion was primarily driven by the state 'Garlic' subsidy program, introduced in 2019 and continued in 2023, which encouraged increased cultivation through payments of 3 000 euro per hectare.

The market size followed a similar pattern, contracting to 7 892 t in 2019 before recovering to 10 610 t in 2023. The rise in domestic output was accompanied by a significant drop in imports, which fell to 510 t in 2022, strengthening reliance on local produce. In 2022, the EU increased duty-free export quotas for garlic, creating potential opportunities that, however, were not realized until 2024.

In 2024, Moldova historically exported 10 t of garlic to the EU market, facilitated by trade liberalization measures announced that year. Concurrently, imports rose to 1 246 t, reflecting active trade flows. The subsidy program was confirmed to officially resume from 2026, indicating ongoing support for producers.

After two consecutive years of decline, garlic production in Moldova rebounded in 2020. That year, the country produced 7 382 tonnes of garlic, marking a 3.6% increase compared to 2019. However, looking at the broader period from 2017 to 2020, overall production fell by 35.9%, with an average annual decline rate of 13.8%. The lowest production level was recorded in 2019 at 7 124 tonnes, which also saw the sharpest year-on-year drop of 25.1%.
