The furniture market in Estonia declined from $265 million in 2018 to $228 million in 2024, influenced by a persistent shortage of skilled labor and the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. The Product Compliance Act, effective from 2019, introduced additional regulatory requirements for manufacturers.

Market volume grew by 25% to $293 million in 2021, driven by consumer preference for quality and durable furniture, alongside company investments in automation and robotics. This recovery was short-lived, however.

From 2022 onwards, the market contracted due to a deteriorating economic climate and falling consumer confidence. The opening of the first IKEA store in Estonia intensified competition, while new labor laws and EU sustainability regulations increased operational costs for producers. By 2024, the market stabilized at $227.5 million.

Production furniture and its parts in Estonia

Estonia's furniture and parts production rebounded after a two-year decline. In 2021, output reached 456.3 million US dollars, marking a significant 23.5% increase compared to the previous year. Looking at the period from 2018 to 2021, production grew by 4%, with a compound annual growth rate of 1.3%. The lowest value was recorded in 2020 at 369.3 million US dollars, following the largest decline of 10.5% in 2019.

Exports furniture and its parts from Estonia

Exports in kind, t

Estonia's exports of furniture and parts have increased for the third consecutive year. In 2021, exports totaled 73 727 tonnes, rising by 5.0% compared to 2020. Over the 2018-2021 period, exports grew by 11.4%, with a compound annual growth rate of 3.7%.

From 2018 to 2021, Finland, Denmark, and Sweden remained the key destinations for Estonia's furniture and parts exports in kind. Finland accounted for 30.0% of exports, Denmark for 14.2%, and Sweden for 11.2%. Together, these three countries represented 55.3% of total export flows.

Estonia's furniture and parts exports recovered after a two-year drop. In 2021, exports were valued at 275.3 million US dollars, showing a 24.2% improvement compared to 2020. Between 2018 and 2021, exports increased by 10.6%, equating to an annualized growth rate of 3.4%. The minimum value was recorded in 2020 at 221.6 million US dollars, after the largest decline of 5.7% in 2019.

During 2018-2021, Finland, Sweden, and Denmark consistently led Estonia's furniture and parts exports in value terms. Finland held 32.5% of exports, Sweden 16.8%, and Denmark 11.5%. Collectively, these three countries accounted for 60.8% of total export flows.

The structure of Estonia's furniture and parts imports in value terms from 2018 to 2021 was diversified. Poland accounted for 17.6% of imports, China for 13.5%, and Lithuania for 8.1%. Together, these three countries made up just 39.3% of total flows, with no single country holding a clearly dominant position.
