Earlier Report Observations

From 2018 to 2021, the fuel wood chips market volume in MERCOSUR declined from 7 358 thousand tons to 6 754 thousand tons. Economic integration within MERCOSUR, including the reduction of internal tariffs, supported cross-border trade at the beginning of the period.

In 2022, the market surged by 28% to 8 659 thousand tons, then stabilized at 8 702 thousand tons in 2023. The drop in natural gas production in Bolivia in 2023 increased regional demand for fuel wood as an alternative energy source. Reduced exports in 2023 also made more product available domestically.

In 2024, bans on wood burning were introduced in parts of MERCOSUR to improve air quality, reflecting tighter environmental restrictions on fuel wood use. Ongoing bloc integration, including new member accessions, continued to shape the trade framework for wood chips.
