The coniferous wood fuel market in MERCOSUR contracted from 3 531 thousand cubic meters in 2018 to 3 066 thousand cubic meters in 2021, a reduction of over 13%. This decline was followed by a sudden expansion in 2022, when market volume jumped to 3 685 thousand cubic meters.

The growth in 2022 represented an increase of more than 20% compared to 2021. However, the market could not sustain this level, and in 2023 it fell back to 3 480 thousand cubic meters, erasing part of the previous year's gain.

MERCOSUR's production of coniferous wood fuel has declined for the third year in a row. In 2020, the region produced 3,161 thousand cubic meters, which represents a 6.6% decrease from 2019. Looking at the broader period from 2017 to 2020, production fell by 23.1%, translating to an average annual decline of 8.4%.

Exports coniferous wood fuel from MERCOSUR

Exports in kind, m³

Following two years of decline, MERCOSUR's exports of coniferous wood fuel rebounded in 2020. That year, exports reached 21,922 cubic meters, showing a strong increase of 16.2% compared to 2019. Over the 2017-2020 period, however, exports dropped by 74%, with a compound annual growth rate of -36.2%. The lowest export volume was recorded in 2019 at 18,868 cubic meters, which also saw the largest decline of 54.6%.

From 2017 to 2020, Free Zones were the dominant player in MERCOSUR's exports of coniferous wood fuel in kind, accounting for 78.1% of total export flows.

After two years of decline, MERCOSUR's exports of coniferous wood fuel in value terms saw a modest recovery in 2020. Exports that year amounted to 866 thousand US dollars, marking a slight increase of 3.7% from 2019. Over the 2017-2020 period, exports fell by 80.6%, which corresponds to an average annual decrease of 42.1%. The lowest value was recorded in 2019 at 835 thousand US dollars, with the largest decline of 58.6% also occurring that year.

The highest import volume was recorded in 2018, while the lowest was in 2020, with a peak-to-trough ratio of 955 times.
