Earlier Report Observations

Between 2018 and 2019, the Hungarian market for fuel wood chips and particles grew from 1,084 thousand tonnes to 1,123 thousand tonnes. This expansion was supported by increasing consumer demand and efforts to curb illegal timber imports, which tightened supply. However, in 2020 the market volume contracted sharply to 836 thousand tonnes. Despite continued strong demand and rising prices noted in 2021, the market remained nearly flat at 840 thousand tonnes, indicating that supply constraints were preventing any recovery.

The energy crisis triggered by the Russia-Ukraine war in 2022 spurred household demand for wood as an alternative heating source. However, the Hungarian government's introduction of administratively set prices for firewood and strict new transport documentation rules simultaneously constrained commercial supply. This combination led to a severe market contraction to 524 thousand tonnes in 2022. The price cap was lifted in April 2023, but supply was further hampered by drought conditions affecting forest stocks, contributing to a further decline to 488 thousand tonnes.

Market volume continued to fall in 2024, reaching 398 thousand tonnes. Strict transport regulations, including mandatory waybills for shipments, persisted. While Verteserdo Zrt. launched an online shop to facilitate consumer access, this did not offset the broader supply limitations. Looking to 2025, the government has stated it does not plan to reintroduce price controls, but drought and storm damage remain risks to the sustainable supply of wood.
