Earlier Report Observations

Argentina's frozen potato production increased from 195.7 thousand tonnes in 2018 to 249.6 thousand tonnes in 2020, driven by significant capacity expansions. In 2019, the inauguration of Simplot's new plant in Luján de Cuyo added 120 thousand tonnes of annual output, while the voluntary quality protocol established in 2018 aimed to enhance product standards for market access. The COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 reinforced supply chain investments to maintain production continuity, supporting further growth.

Production reached a peak of 256.2 thousand tonnes in 2021 but then declined over the next two years. The enactment of the Front-of-Pack Labeling Law in 2021 and its subsequent regulation via Decree 151/2022 required packaging modifications, disrupting operations. By 2022, output had eased to 250.0 thousand tonnes, and despite Lamb Weston's entry with plant expansions, the full implementation of labeling rules by 2023 contributed to a sharp drop in production to 205.7 thousand tonnes.
