The fresh papaya market in Oman expanded to a peak volume of 6 773 tonnes in 2019 before declining to 5 842 tonnes by 2023. This contraction was primarily due to a sharp 87% drop in imports, which fell from 972 tonnes to 129 tonnes over the period. Domestic production, however, grew steadily from 5 572 tonnes to 5 864 tonnes, indicating a shift in supply sources.

By 2024, local papaya cultivation demonstrated success despite climatic challenges, as seen with farms like Hamood Al Nabhani's in Nizwa. The Silal Fruit and Vegetable Central Market provided organizational and administrative support to local farmers and SMEs, enhancing market access and distribution. Oman's participation in international events such as the Global Village promoted domestically grown fresh fruits, stimulating demand.

Evolving consumer preferences toward fresh and organic produce, coupled with the development of local markets including Mutrah and Salalah, improved the availability and marketing of papayas. These elements supported the ongoing trend of rising domestic output and reduced reliance on imports.

Oman's production of fresh papayas remained stable in 2020 at 5 830 tonnes, showing little change from the previous year. Production reached its lowest point in 2018 at 5 572 tonnes, before climbing to its peak of 5 830 tonnes in 2019. Exports hit their lowest point in 2019 at 4.9 tonnes, down from a high in 2017, representing a 6.8-fold difference between these years. In 2020, exports rebounded sharply to 22.5 tonnes, marking a substantial increase of 363.1% compared to 2019. The most significant decline occurred in 2018, when exports dropped by 69.3%.

From 2017 to 2020, Yemen was the leading destination for Oman's fresh papaya exports in volume terms, accounting for 35.4% of total exports. The United Arab Emirates followed with 31.7%, and Qatar with 19.3%. Together, these three countries represented 86.4% of Oman's total fresh papaya export flows during this period.

The value of Oman's fresh papaya exports showed considerable volatility from 2017 to 2020. Export values reached their lowest point in 2019 at 5 000 US dollars, before climbing to a peak of 30 000 US dollars in 2020, representing a 6.2-fold increase. The 2020 figure marked a dramatic rise of 520.8% compared to the previous year. The most significant decline occurred in 2019, when export values fell by 50.4%.

During the 2017–2020 period, the United Arab Emirates was the top destination for Oman's fresh papaya exports in value terms, accounting for 24.0% of total export value. Qatar followed with 22.1%, and Free Zones with 19.9%. Together, these three markets represented 66.1% of Oman's total fresh papaya export value during these years.

Import volumes reached their peak in 2018 at 971.5 tonnes, before declining to their lowest point in 2020 at 461.6 tonnes, representing a 2.1-fold difference between these years. The 2020 figure marked a steep decrease of 51.3% compared to 2019. The most significant increase occurred in 2018, when import volumes rose by 103.9%.

From 2017 to 2020, India was Oman's primary supplier of fresh papayas in volume terms, accounting for 59.9% of total imports. Sri Lanka followed with 16.3%, and the United Arab Emirates with 15.9%. Together, these three countries supplied 92.1% of Oman's total fresh papaya imports during this period.

Import values reached their lowest point in 2017, before climbing to their peak in 2019 at 1 419 000 US dollars, representing a 5-fold difference between these years. In 2020, import values declined to approximately 803 000 US dollars, marking a sharp decrease of 43.4% compared to the previous year. The most significant increase occurred in 2018, when import values rose by 381.8%.

Throughout the 2017–2020 period, India remained Oman's key supplier of fresh papayas in value terms, accounting for 57.8% of total import value. Thailand followed with 17.4%, and the United Arab Emirates with 12.0%. Together, these three countries accounted for 87.2% of Oman's total fresh papaya import value during these years.
