Farmers adopted intercropping systems to optimize land use and mitigate some production risks.

By 2022 and 2023, the growth pace moderated but remained positive, reflecting market resilience. Nigeria maintained its position as Africa's largest producer even as the continental papaya market contracted in value terms in 2023, with local output continuing its gradual upward trend.

Nigeria's fresh papaya production increased for the second year in a row. In 2020, the country produced 852.2 thousand tons, marking a 1.0% rise from 2019. Production hit its lowest point in 2018 at 835.7 thousand tons, which also saw the steepest decline of 0.3%.
