Ghana's fresh papaya production has increased for the second consecutive year. In 2020, the country produced 5 891 tonnes of fresh papayas, marking a modest 2.2% rise compared to the previous year. Looking at the period from 2017 to 2020, production grew by 2.6%, which translates to an annualized growth rate of 0.8%. The lowest production level was recorded in 2018 at 5 622 tonnes, when output declined by 2.1%. This was followed by a recovery in 2019, with production increasing by 2.5%.

Exports fresh papayas from Ghana

Fresh papaya exports from Ghana have risen for the third year in a row. In 2020, exports reached 2 091 tonnes, showing a substantial increase of 43.8% compared to the previous year. Over the four-year period from 2017 to 2020, exports grew by 56.8%, with a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 16.2%.

From 2017 to 2020, Germany, Burkina Faso, and the United Kingdom remained the primary destinations for Ghana's fresh papaya exports. Germany accounted for 58.2% of exports in volume, Burkina Faso for 17.1%, and the United Kingdom for 6.8%. Together, these three markets represented 82.0% of Ghana's total fresh papaya exports during this period.

The data shows irregular fluctuations, pointing to a volatile market environment. Exports in value terms reached their lowest point in 2017 and peaked in 2020, with a 2.3-fold increase between these years. In 2020, Ghana's fresh papaya exports were valued at 2 050 thousand US dollars, reflecting a significant rise of 108.3% compared to the previous year. The smallest change occurred in 2019, when exports declined by 0.1%.

Between 2017 and 2020, Germany, the Netherlands, and the United Kingdom formed the core markets for Ghana's fresh papaya exports in value terms. Germany led with a 68.3% share, followed by the Netherlands at 9.4%, and the United Kingdom at 5.4%. Collectively, these three countries accounted for 83.1% of Ghana's total export value in this category.
