The market for fresh or chilled whole chickens in Slovakia contracted sharply between 2018 and 2020. Volume fell from 31 437 t to 13 013 t, a drop of over 58%. Production and imports both declined substantially, indicating a broad-based reduction in supply and demand.

During this period, consumer preferences shifted toward higher-quality products. In 2018, interest grew in BIO chickens raised with access to outdoor space and natural feed. The following year saw a continued trend toward freshness, locality, and naturalness, with increased demand for farm-fresh chicken sold through direct channels.

The decline continued in 2020, with market volume reaching 13 013 t. Over the two-year period, the market lost more than 18 000 t in volume.

Slovakia's production of fresh or chilled whole chickens declined for the second year in a row. In 2020, output was valued at 18,411 thousand US dollars, down 32.9% from the previous year. Production fell 43.2% between 2017 and 2020, averaging an annual decline of 17.2%. The highest value was recorded in 2018 at 37,621 thousand US dollars, which also saw the largest increase of 16.0%.

Production of fresh or chilled whole chickens in Slovakia dropped for the second consecutive year. In 2020, Slovakia produced 9,460 tonnes, a sharp decrease of 41.5% compared to 2019. From 2017 to 2020, production fell by 51.8%, with an average annual decline of 21.6%. The peak was in 2018 at 21,488 tonnes, which also experienced the largest increase of 9.5%.

Export volumes showed significant volatility during this period. Exports reached their lowest point in 2019 at 463 tonnes and peaked in 2018 at 2,112 tonnes, representing a 4.6-fold difference. In 2020, Slovakia exported 721 tonnes, a sudden rise of 55.7% from the previous year. The largest decline occurred in 2019, dropping by 78.1%.

From 2017 to 2020, Czechia and Hungary were the dominant markets for Slovakia's exports in volume, together accounting for 87.9% of total flows, with other countries making up the remainder.

Export values experienced noticeable fluctuations over these years. The lowest point was in 2019 at 745 thousand US dollars, while the peak was in 2017, showing a fourfold difference. In 2020, exports amounted to 1,135 thousand US dollars, a steep improvement of 52.4% from the previous year. The largest decline was in 2019, falling by 72.0%.
