Earlier Report Observations

The Lithuanian fresh pork market saw significant volume swings from 2018 to 2020. In 2019, market volume dipped to 103,714 t, influenced by a contraction in imports, which historically supplied about 60% of the market. The following year, volume jumped sharply to 127,515 t as the COVID-19 pandemic altered consumer flows and supply patterns, while ongoing EU origin labeling rules continued to shape market access.

External trade constraints and cost inflation marked the middle period. African swine fever-related trade restrictions affected export channels in 2021. Then in 2022, rising energy, transport and feed costs drove food price inflation, explaining the drop in physical volume to 123,616 t alongside a rise in market value to 312.5 million $.

By 2023, a 30–40% pork price surge, driven by global raw material costs and increased EU exports to China, led to a further consumption decline to 119,342 t despite growing demand for local antibiotic-free pork, highlighted by retailer Norfa’s record procurement of 2,000 t. In 2024, volume stabilized near 120,030 t, supported by strong domestic demand from major chains and a slowdown in price growth after global energy markets settled.
