Earlier Report Observations

The market volume for fresh or chilled pork carcasses and half-carcasses in Germany grew from 5.2 million tonnes in 2018 to 6.4 million tonnes in 2019. This expansion was driven by the entry of the SUNTAT group with a new brand focused on quality and sustainable processes, alongside increasing concentration of specialized pig farming in key regions like Bavaria, Lower Saxony, and North Rhine-Westphalia, which boosted production efficiency.

From 2020, the market entered a downturn. Pandemic-related restrictions on slaughter capacity and a drop in out-of-home demand reduced production, while the initial spread of African swine fever (ASF) began affecting pig herds. These factors led to a decline in market volume to 6.2 million tonnes in 2020 and a sharp fall to 3.4 million tonnes in 2021.

The contraction continued through 2022‑2024, with market volume dropping to 2.4 million tonnes in 2024. Import bans by major trading partners such as China and Japan due to ASF outbreaks severely limited export opportunities and depressed pig prices. Simultaneously, the sector faced a structural crisis with a significant reduction in pig herds and farm numbers. The phased introduction of mandatory state animal husbandry labeling from 2023 onward added regulatory pressure, influencing market dynamics alongside shifting consumer preferences toward meat alternatives.
