The market for fresh or chilled duck meat in Hungary opened the period at 42 414 tonnes in 2018, when a sharp reduction in duck slaughter limited supply, while the emergence of home delivery services with vacuum packaging supported demand for quality products. The following year, price caps and other measures in the meat sector boosted domestic sales, and the expansion of e-commerce improved accessibility, keeping the market volume stable at 42 108 tonnes.

In 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic caused a significant drop in market volume to 36 791 tonnes, compounded by new rules requiring origin labeling for unpackaged fresh meat to enhance consumer trust. A recovery followed in 2021, with the market rising to 42 760 tonnes as growing popularity of duck liver created a new product segment and increased overall demand for duck meat.

After a sharp contraction to 24 976 tonnes in 2022, amid continued strict labeling regulations and a shift in meat consumption toward discount chains and smaller packages, the market rebounded to 28 850 tonnes in 2023.

That year, the country produced 89 640 tonnes, marking a significant year-over-year increase of 41.5%. However, looking at the broader period from 2018 to 2021, overall production decreased by 3.5%, which translates to an annualized decline of 1.2%. The lowest production level was recorded in 2020 at 63 350 tonnes, when the largest decline of 30.3% occurred.

After two consecutive years of decline, the value of Hungary's fresh or chilled duck meat production rose in 2021. Output reached 312.7 million US dollars, representing a substantial year-over-year growth of 60.9%. Over the full 2018-2021 period, however, production value fell by 6.8%, equating to an annualized decrease of 2.3%. The lowest value was observed in 2020 at 194.4 million US dollars, accompanied by the steepest decline of 27.7% that year.

From 2018 to 2021, Germany, Czechia, and the United Kingdom were significant but not dominant buyers of Hungary's fresh or chilled duck meat exports in volume terms. Germany accounted for 20.2% of exports, Czechia for 12.6%, and the United Kingdom for 12.2%. Together, these three countries represented 45.1% of total export volumes.
