Fresh or chilled duck meat market in Western Europe

The market for fresh or chilled duck meat in Western Europe saw modest growth in 2019, reaching 273.4 thousand tonnes after 270.2 thousand tonnes in 2018, but then fell to 234.4 thousand tonnes in 2020.

The downward trend continued in 2021, with the market declining to 223.8 thousand tonnes. This was linked to a decrease in poultry production in Germany due to specialized animal husbandry and herd changes. In 2022, the market contracted sharply to 157.8 thousand tonnes, primarily because of widespread avian influenza outbreaks that disrupted duck meat production and consumption across the region.

A partial recovery occurred in 2023, with market volume rising to 184.2 thousand tonnes. This improvement was supported by renewed demand from the foodservice sector following the COVID-19 pandemic, although the industry continued to experience the after-effects of avian flu.

Western Europe's production of fresh or chilled duck meat has declined for the third year in a row. In 2020, the region produced 219.3 thousand tons, which represents a significant 13.5% drop compared to 2019. Looking at the period from 2017 to 2020, overall production fell by 17.2%, with an average annual decline of 6.1%.

In 2020, the value of fresh or chilled duck meat production in Western Europe was 1,598 million US dollars, showing a moderate decrease of 8.3% from 2019. Between 2017 and 2020, production value actually increased by 5.8%, translating to an average annual growth rate of 1.9%. The lowest value was recorded in 2018 at 1,495 million US dollars, while the peak occurred in 2019 with 1,743 million US dollars. The most substantial increase happened in 2019, when production value jumped by 16.6%.

In 2020, exports totaled 37,252 tons, marking a substantial 21.9% reduction compared to the previous year. From 2017 to 2020, exports dropped by 45.5%, which corresponds to an average annual decline of 18.3%. The highest export volume was recorded in 2018 at 69,185 tons. The most significant decrease occurred in 2019 with a 31.1% drop, while the largest increase was in 2018 at 1.2%.

Between 2017 and 2020, Western Europe's exports of fresh or chilled duck meat were distributed across a wide range of markets. The United Kingdom accounted for 8.7% of exports, Spain for 8.2%, and Hong Kong for 7.3%. Together, these three markets represented just 24.2% of total export flows.

The peak value was recorded in 2018 at 391.0 million US dollars, with the largest increase also occurring that year at 0.2%.

Between 2017 and 2020, import value dropped by 28.3%, corresponding to an average annual decline of 10.5%. The peak value was recorded in 2018 at 431.0 million US dollars. The most substantial decrease happened in 2019 with a 23.2% drop, while the largest increase occurred in 2018 at 10.2%.
