The market for retail insulin medicaments in Hungary declined from $1.7 million in production and a market size of $135.3 million in 2018 to $125.7 million in 2019. By 2022, the market had contracted sharply to $60.4 million. This drop coincided with the withdrawal of four insulin preparations by Sanofi from the Hungarian market, disrupting supply for thousands of patients, alongside regulatory tightening that introduced stricter prescribing and dispensing rules as well as modified licensing and packaging requirements for controlled substances like insulin.

A slight recovery to $62.5 million occurred in 2023, supported by the launch of a new combination drug, Suliqua, which expanded treatment options. The market continued to grow in 2024, reaching $68.1 million, while export values remained elevated above $110 million throughout the period.

Hungary's exports of retail sale medicaments with insulin increased for the third consecutive year. In 2021, exports amounted to 577.9 t, reflecting a rise of 26.6% compared to 2020. Over the period from 2018 to 2021, exports grew by 43%, with a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 12.7%.
