The Hungarian folding paperboard box market expanded from 118.9 thousand tonnes in 2018 to 137.6 thousand tonnes in 2020. This growth was supported by the 2018 commissioning of Vajda-Papír's new paper mill, a 15-billion-forint facility with state aid that significantly increased domestic production capacity, alongside government procurement orders that bolstered local demand.

After 2020, imports of folding paperboard boxes peaked at 62.4 thousand tonnes in 2022 before declining to 33.6 thousand tonnes in 2025, while exports remained relatively stable. By 2025, the upcoming EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) and stricter labelling quotas for paper packaging waste were driving manufacturers to adopt more recyclable designs and production processes.
