Earlier Report Observations
Between 2018 and 2021, South African fig production decreased from 2 197 t to 1 980 t, while the domestic market volume contracted from 1 788 t to 1 640 t. This downward trend in both output and consumption continued through the period.
In 2022, supply chain disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic created distribution challenges for agricultural products, including figs. Concurrently, the significant growth of e-commerce in the wholesale trade of agricultural raw materials opened new potential sales channels. The following year, improved market access for South African fruit exports helped support fig shipments abroad, even as domestic production fell further to 1 746 t and market volume declined to 1 482 t.
South Africa's fig sector remained oriented toward export markets, particularly the European Union. Policy efforts to expand international market access continued to shape the trade environment for figs through 2024 and 2025.
