After a further dip to 1 313 tons in 2020, the market rebounded to 1 524 tons in 2021. In 2022, volume contracted again to 1 448 tons, influenced by global supply chain disruptions which affected trade flows and production. A recovery followed in 2023, with the market reaching 1 579 tons, supported by a large and active global trade market for fish and aquatic invertebrates which improved access and conditions.

The region's production base for these extracts was underpinned by the expansion of aquaculture, notably in Nigeria and Uganda, where increased output of fish and shellfish provided essential raw materials. This growth in freshwater fish and mariculture, including species like shrimp, was encouraged by national policies aiming to boost sustainable aquatic food production. Concurrently, shifting consumer preferences within Sub-Saharan Africa towards higher-value products such as crustaceans and molluscs began to influence demand patterns for processed extracts and juices.

Long-term efforts emphasized sustainable aquatic food production to address supply-demand imbalances, with continued investments in research, technology, and infrastructure across the region aimed at strengthening the sector's foundation and market stability.

In 2020, the region produced 1,221 tonnes, marking a modest 5.4% decrease from 2019. Over the period from 2017 to 2020, production fell by 27.9%, with an average annual decline of 10.3%.

Exports peaked in 2018 and then dropped to their lowest point in 2020, with a dramatic 74-fold difference between these years. In 2020, Sub-Saharan Africa exported 2.4 tonnes of extracts and juices of meat, fish, and aquatic invertebrates, down 87.0% from the previous year. The highest export volume was recorded in 2018 at 175.3 tonnes. The largest decline occurred in 2019, with a drop of 89.7%, while the biggest increase was in 2018, at 64.3%.

In 2020, imports were recorded at 748,000 US dollars, up 38.0% from 2019. However, between 2017 and 2020, imports overall decreased by 69.7%, averaging an annual drop of 32.8%. The lowest value was in 2019 at 542,000 US dollars, which also saw the largest decline of 65.7%.

From 2017 to 2020, Special Categories (20.0% of imports in value terms), Belgium (6.3%), and Italy (1.9%) were among the largest suppliers of extracts and juices of meat, fish, and aquatic invertebrates to Sub-Saharan Africa.
