Earlier Report Observations

Between 2018 and 2023, the market volume for extracts and juices of meat, fish and aquatic invertebrates in Eastern Europe grew from 4 228 tonnes to 4 873 tonnes, with notable fluctuations. The initial increase to 4 718 tonnes in 2019 was supported by active involvement of state-owned companies in the extraction and processing of aquatic bioresources and a rising focus on aquaculture, which boosted domestic production.

Market growth continued in 2022, reaching 4 981 tonnes, as ongoing development of aquaculture and state investments in the fishery sector expanded production capacity. This helped offset the impact of international sanctions and supply chain disruptions on trade flows. However, in 2023, the total market volume declined slightly to 4 873 tonnes. This occurred despite a 34% surge in domestic production, driven by increased catches and investment in processing, because sanctions and logistical challenges caused a sharp 46% contraction in imports.

Looking ahead to 2024, the planned commissioning of new sea-based trout farms is expected to further increase domestic production of fish-based products. Over the full period, the expansion of aquaculture served as a key driver for the market, partially compensating for the volatile trade environment influenced by geopolitical factors.
