The Italian epoxy resins market volume showed significant fluctuations between 2018 and 2024. After starting at 94 thousand metric tons in 2018, consumption fell to 82 thousand metric tons in 2019 and further to 76 thousand metric tons in 2020. A strong recovery followed in 2021, pushing the market to 98.5 thousand metric tons, and a slight increase to 100.3 thousand metric tons occurred in 2022. However, the trend reversed again with a drop to 89.4 thousand metric tons in 2023 and a more pronounced contraction to 71.3 thousand metric tons in 2024.

The sharp market decline in 2024 was influenced by regulatory changes at the EU level. The European Commission initiated an anti-dumping proceeding on imports of epoxy resins from China, South Korea, Taiwan, and Thailand, requiring import registration and likely reducing import volumes. Simultaneously, the EU introduced significant restrictions on the use of Bisphenol A (BPA) and other hazardous bisphenols in food-contact materials, including epoxy resins, affecting production and demand in that application segment.

The market showed an unstable trend throughout the period. The minimum value was recorded in 2017, while the maximum was reached in 2018, with a 1.9-fold difference between these years. In 2020, the output of epoxy resins in primary forms in Italy was valued at 201.8 million US dollars, representing a moderate year-on-year decline of 9.8%. The largest increase occurred in 2018 at 85.2%, while the largest decline was in 2019 at 18.8%.

The largest decline occurred in 2019 at 20.2%, while the largest increase was in 2018 at 40.9%.

After a two-year decline, the volume of epoxy resins in primary forms exported from Italy increased. In 2020, export volume reached 37 574 tonnes, up by 4.9% year-on-year. Over the period from 2017 to 2020, exports decreased by 12.5%, with a compound annual growth rate of 4.4%. The minimum value was recorded in 2019 at 35 828 tonnes, which also saw the largest decline of 8.7%.

From 2017 to 2020, Germany, China, and Brazil were notable but not dominant buyers of epoxy resins in primary forms from Italy. Germany accounted for 19.2% of exports in kind, China for 16.9%, and Brazil for 7.5%. Together, their combined share reached 43.7% of total exports in kind.

Italy's export value of epoxy resins in primary forms declined for the second consecutive year. In 2020, Italy exported 144.1 million US dollars worth of these resins, showing a small decline of 0.7% from the previous year. Over the period from 2017 to 2020, exports decreased by 8.8%, with a compound annual growth rate of 3.0%. The maximum value was recorded in 2018 at 162.3 million US dollars, which also saw the largest increase of 2.7%, while the largest decline occurred in 2019 at 10.7%.

The maximum value was recorded in 2018 at 217.8 million US dollars, which also saw the largest increase of 12.9%.
