Consumption of epoxy resins in Bulgaria, measured in physical volume, rose sharply to 1 423 t in 2021 but then entered a downward trend, declining to 1 176 t in 2022, 1 138 t in 2023, and 996 t in 2024. In monetary terms, the market value mirrored this movement, peaking at 7 841 thousand USD in 2021 before falling to 5 015 thousand USD by the end of the period.

The latter part of the period saw regulatory and industrial shifts. In 2024, new EU classifications requiring hazardous "H360F" labeling for many epoxy reactive diluents drove the development of more environmentally compliant blends like Olin®'s D.E.R.® 3111 and D.E.R.® 3561. At the same time, expanding electric vehicle production boosted demand for epoxy resins used in lightweight battery housings and protective composites.

Exports epoxy resins in primary forms from Bulgaria

Exports in kind, t

After two consecutive years of decline, Bulgaria's cross-border shipments of epoxy resins in primary forms increased in 2020. Exports reached 195 t that year, representing a significant 13.6% rise compared to 2019. Looking at the broader 2017-2020 period, exports decreased by 21.1%, which translates to an average annual decline of 7.6%. The lowest export volume was recorded in 2019 at 172 t, with the sharpest year-on-year drop of 17.6% occurring that same year.

Between 2017 and 2020, Italy and North Macedonia dominated Bulgaria's export market for epoxy resins in primary forms, together accounting for 83.6% of total export volume. The remaining share was distributed among various other countries.

Bulgaria's export value of epoxy resins in primary forms declined for the third year in a row. In 2020, exports amounted to 662 K $ US, showing a slight decrease of 1.0% from the previous year. Over the 2017-2020 period, export value fell by 34.2%, equivalent to an average annual decline of 13.0%.

In 2020, Bulgaria imported 1 334 t of epoxy resins in primary forms, marking a modest 4.3% decrease compared to 2019. Over the 2017-2020 period, import volume declined by 7.3%, averaging a 2.5% annual decrease. The lowest import volume was recorded in 2018 at 1 304 t, which also saw the largest year-on-year drop of 9.4%. In contrast, 2019 experienced the biggest increase at 6.9%.

During the 2017-2020 period, Turkey, Germany, and Italy were the leading sources of Bulgaria's epoxy resin imports by volume. Turkey accounted for 49.8% of imports, Germany for 22.0%, and Italy for 12.4%, together representing 84.2% of total import volume.
