Earlier Report Observations

The market for fresh or chilled edible brassicas in MENA expanded from 1 889 thousand tonnes in 2018 to 2 061 thousand tonnes in 2021. Growth accelerated in 2020, when the volume reached 1 997 thousand tonnes, supported by global supply chain disruptions that reduced exports and by increasing consumer health consciousness raising demand for fresh and organic produce.

After a contraction to 1 956 thousand tonnes in 2022 due to higher production costs driven by the Russia-Ukraine war's impact on fertilizer and energy prices, the market rebounded strongly to 2 159 thousand tonnes in 2023. This recovery was aided by breakthroughs in disease-resistant seed varieties that cut crop losses and by growing consumer preference for convenient fresh-cut and ready-to-eat brassica products.
