Earlier Report Observations

From 2018 to 2022, the Indonesian fresh edible brassicas market expanded from 1.5 million tons to 1.7 million tons. This growth was supported by the introduction of the cold-resistant 'Sehati F1' cabbage variety in 2018, which enabled cultivation in lowland areas. In subsequent years, a natural gas subsidy for the food processing industry lowered production costs, and the launch of the National Cold Chain program in 2020 improved logistics and reduced post-harvest losses. By 2022, eased import rules for refrigeration equipment further strengthened storage infrastructure.

In 2023, market volume contracted to 1.6 million tons following the implementation of the SNI standard for cleanliness and pesticide residues, which raised quality compliance requirements. During the same period, younger consumers shifted preference toward fresh cabbage for salads, but this was insufficient to offset the regulatory pressure on supply. Starting in 2024, new regulations on maximum pesticide limits and origin labeling continued to shape the market environment, while the government's 2025 plan targets a 3% annual production increase through farmer-industry partnerships.
