Earlier Report Observations

Production of fresh edible brassicas in Chile rose from 131.6 thousand tonnes in 2018 to 139.9 thousand tonnes in 2020. This growth was primarily driven by an expansion in the planted area for broccoli, a key brassica crop, which increased over several years. At the same time, the Food Labeling and Advertising Law (Law 20.606) came into full effect, prompting consumers to choose healthier options like fresh vegetables. The launch of the Chile Origen Consciente (ChOC) sustainability program in 2018 also provided a framework for certified production standards in the fresh vegetable sector.

After a temporary dip to 133.4 thousand tonnes in 2021, output jumped to 158.1 thousand tonnes in 2022. The rebound was supported by the ongoing implementation of the ChOC program, which encouraged more efficient and sustainable farming practices. The post‑pandemic recovery in supply chains and sustained consumer interest in nutritious foods further contributed to the increase.

Output moderated to 152.2 thousand tonnes in 2023 but remained significantly higher than pre‑2022 levels. Throughout the period, the labeling law continued to influence market dynamics by reinforcing demand for fresh produce, while broader public‑private initiatives to open export markets for Chilean fruits helped maintain investment in the agricultural sector.
