The market for fresh or chilled edible brassicas in the Caribbean experienced significant volatility between 2018 and 2023. After starting at 235.2 thousand tonnes in 2018, market volume contracted sharply over the next two years, falling to 207.8 thousand tonnes in 2019 and then to a low of 173.5 thousand tonnes in 2020.

From 2021 onwards, the market entered a recovery phase, growing to 180.8 thousand tonnes that year and continuing to expand to 191.0 thousand tonnes in 2022 and 195.2 thousand tonnes in 2023. This rebound was driven primarily by increased domestic production, which rose from 161.1 thousand tonnes in 2020 to 181.1 thousand tonnes in 2023, while import levels remained relatively stable.

Despite three consecutive years of growth, the 2023 market volume of 195.2 thousand tonnes remained below the 2018 peak, indicating that the market has not fully recovered from the earlier downturn.

Caribbean edible brassicas production has declined for the third year in a row. In 2020, the region produced 161.1 thousand tons, marking an 18.0% year-over-year decrease. From 2017 to 2020, production fell by 41%, with a compound annual growth rate of -16.1%.

Exports edible brassicas from Caribbean

The market showed significant volatility during this period. Import levels varied widely, with an 8.2-fold difference between the peak in 2019 and the low in 2017. In 2020, Caribbean edible brassicas exports totaled 615 tons, a sharp 84.3% drop from the previous year. The highest export volume was recorded in 2019 at 3 919 tons, which represented a substantial 518.6% increase that year.

From 2017 to 2020, Canada and the United States were the main destinations for Caribbean edible brassicas exports in volume terms, together accounting for 10.3% of total export flows.

In 2020, Caribbean exported 1 090 thousand US dollars worth of edible brassicas, a sharp 66.6% decrease compared to 2019. Between 2017 and 2020, exports declined by 66.1%, equivalent to an annualized rate of -30.3%. The peak value was in 2019 at 3 260 thousand US dollars, which saw a 16.3% increase that year.

From 2017 to 2020, the United States, Canada, and Bunkers were the three principal markets for Caribbean edible brassicas exports in value terms, collectively representing 28.4% of total exports.

In 2020, Caribbean edible brassicas imports amounted to 13 018 tons, a solid 14.1% drop from 2019. Between 2017 and 2020, imports decreased by 35.8%, with an annualized rate of -13.8%. The lowest import volume was in 2018 at 12 710 tons, which saw a 37.4% decline that year. In contrast, 2019 recorded a 19.2% increase.

From 2017 to 2020, the United States, Costa Rica, and Canada were the leading sources for Caribbean edible brassicas imports in volume terms. The United States accounted for 67.5% of imports, Costa Rica for 5.9%, and Canada for 2.4%, together making up 75.8% of total import flows.

After rising for two years, Caribbean edible brassicas import volumes declined. In 2020, the region imported 21 800 thousand US dollars worth of edible brassicas, a strong 13.0% decrease compared to 2019. From 2017 to 2020, imports fell by 5.4%, with a compound annual growth rate of -1.8%. The highest value was in 2019 at 24 183 thousand US dollars, which saw a 4.5% increase that year.
