From 2018 to 2019, the market volume for dried shelled peas in France increased from 463.3 to 494.3 thousand tonnes. This growth was supported by the expansion of cultivated areas for pulses, including chickpeas and lentils, as well as public health promotion through the National Nutrition Health Plan. Additionally, the rising popularity of hummus boosted chickpea consumption, benefiting the overall pulse sector.

After declining to 353.9 thousand tonnes in 2020, the market recovered to 395.5 thousand tonnes in 2021, driven by sustained consumption with nearly half of French people eating pulses at least weekly. However, in 2022, volume dropped sharply to 253.7 thousand tonnes before rising again to 334.8 thousand tonnes in 2023. The 2023 increase was facilitated by the launch of a dedicated dried vegetable sector by Euralis and Bonduelle, which increased production areas and farmer participation, alongside higher sales of canned dried vegetables due to inflationary effects.

Throughout the period, product innovations based on lentils, chickpeas, and soy represented over 75% of new launches, while the organic share in dried vegetables reached 17% by 2023. Regulatory measures, such as the AGEC law phasing out single-use plastics and the EU directive strengthening rules against greenwashing, also shaped market conditions by affecting packaging and environmental claims.

In 2020, France produced 558.8 thousand tonnes of dried shelled peas, marking a significant decline of 21.2% compared to the previous year. Over the period from 2017 to 2020, production fell by 29.4%, which translates to an average annual decrease of 11.0%. The sharpest drop occurred in 2018, with a 25.4% reduction, while the largest increase was seen in 2019, at 20.2%.

In 2020, the output of dried shelled peas in France was valued at 213.3 million US dollars, representing a decrease of 12.0% from the year before. From 2017 to 2020, production value declined by 15.4%, averaging a 5.4% annualized rate. The most notable increase was recorded in 2019, at just 0.1%.

In 2020, France exported 239.0 thousand tonnes of dried shelled peas, down by 4.0% from the previous year. Between 2017 and 2020, exports decreased by 19.2%, with an average annual decline of 6.9%. The lowest export volume was in 2018, at 159.5 thousand tonnes, which also saw the largest drop of 46.0%. In contrast, the biggest increase occurred in 2019, with a 56.1% rise.

From 2017 to 2020, Belgium, India, and the Netherlands were the key markets for France's dried shelled pea exports in volume terms, accounting for 42.9%, 11.7%, and 8.5% of total exports, respectively. Together, these three countries represented 63.1% of all export flows.

France's dried shelled pea exports in value terms grew for the second year in a row. In 2020, exports totaled 91 227 thousand US dollars, reflecting a modest increase of 7.3% compared to 2019. Over the 2017-2020 period, however, export value fell by 3.1%, averaging a 1.1% annualized decline. The lowest value was recorded in 2018, at 65 407 thousand US dollars, which also experienced the largest decrease of 30.5%. The most significant increase was in 2019, at 30.0%.

Between 2017 and 2020, Belgium, India, and the United Kingdom remained the top buyers of dried shelled peas from France in value terms, with shares of 39.9%, 9.3%, and 9.2%, respectively. Collectively, these three markets accounted for 58.4% of total export value.

Over the 2017-2020 period, imports declined by 58.8%, with a compound annual growth rate of -25.6%. The lowest import volume was in 2018, at 32.6 thousand tonnes, which also saw the sharpest drop of 60.4%. The largest increase occurred in 2019, at 3.8%.

From 2017 to 2020, Sweden, Canada, and Lithuania were the primary sources for France's dried shelled pea imports in volume terms, contributing 30.9%, 20.2%, and 13.1% of total imports, respectively. Together, these three countries made up 64.2% of all import flows.

Following a two-year decline, France's dried shelled pea imports in value terms rebounded. In 2020, imports were recorded at 19 943 thousand US dollars, up by 14.9% compared to 2019. Over the 2017-2020 period, however, import value decreased by 43.6%, with a compound annual growth rate of -17.4%. The lowest value was in 2019, at 17 354 thousand US dollars, while the largest decline was in 2018, at 49.1%.

The country composition of France's dried shelled pea imports in value terms from 2017 to 2020 was relatively dispersed. Sweden, Canada, and Belgium were the top sources, with shares of 19.9%, 16.2%, and 11.1%, respectively, but together they accounted for only 47.2% of total import value. The remaining 52.8% was distributed among a wide range of other countries.
