Earlier Report Observations

From 2018, the launch of the AgriFARM project aimed at increasing family farm incomes and improving market access in targeted prefectures began strengthening the agricultural sector. This was followed in 2020 by the establishment of the Agricultural Development Fund (FODA) to support producers and processors for local and regional markets. These initiatives contributed to a steady rise in domestic production of dried shelled legumes and supported overall market growth, which was further supplemented by a significant increase in import volumes starting in 2019.

The market expansion continued with the 2021 launch of the World Bank-funded Commercial Agriculture Development Project (PDACG), which aimed to transform Guinean agriculture into a competitive commercial sector. Concurrent government tenders for post-harvest equipment like shellers and hullers sought to improve the agricultural value chain. These measures, along with the ongoing implementation of the AgriFARM and PADAG support projects, helped sustain production levels and meet growing domestic demand, leading to a peak in total market volume by 2021.

In the latter part of the period, reinforced incentive policies and subsidies became a key driver. In 2023, the sector benefited from GNF 404 billion in allocated credit and 78 034 tonnes of subsidized fertilizer, promoting agricultural growth and crop diversification including dried legumes. This support, alongside continued institutional backing for agricultural campaigns and land management, helped maintain stable, high production levels and allowed the market volume to recover and grow slightly after a minor contraction in 2022.
